FPV Drone Flights
🌎 Real World Application

One of the greatest fears when flying a drone is losing it in the water, seeing your hard earned money disappear in the blink of an eye, leaving you with nothing but a rescued GoPro. This pain has gone on for far too long. Today, we are putting an end to this by giving you the knowledge to waterproof your drone. We will be using an inexpensive product that has proven its effectiveness and is considered the gold standard in the hobby: MG Chemicals Silicone Conformal Coating.
Conformal coating is a thin, protective film that adheres to the contours of a printed circuit board (PCB). This coating creates an insulating layer over the components and solder joints, preventing potential electrical shorts. It is widely available online on sites like Amazon and a single 60ml bottle can last for up to 100 drone applications. It is best applied directly to the components of a completed drone build. When painting it on like nail polish, be sure to avoid the connectors, as coating them could adversely affect the drone during flight. Finally, use a UV torch to double check that the protective layer has been applied evenly.
For easy maintenance, you can use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) to remove the coating if needed. Note that buttons and connectors must still be covered or plugged to ensure a fully waterproof housing. You are now armed with the knowledge to waterproof your drones.
“This work’s perfectly for those fast action shots across water, even holds up very well in salt water”
